Got a spare candle? Good, because H.C. Bunner's *Short Sixes* is the kind of book you're meant to read while the flame flickers. Set in the quiet corners of late-1800s New York, these little stories are like tiny puzzles, each one winding up with a surprise twist or a wry joke. The big mystery isn't 'whodunit' but 'what just happened?' One minute you're laughing at a fat judge who keeps getting the wrong size shoe, and the next you're worried about a young man who accidentally falls in love with two women who might be sisters. Or ghosts. It’s hard to tell. The biggest hook? These aren't like modern stories that stretch on for hundreds of pages. They hit hard and fast, then end before you've even picked up your bookmark. Perfect for anyone who only has a short time to read but wants something clever, funny, and a little bit strange.

The Story

Okay, so here's the deal: this is a collection of super short stories written back in the 1890s, and the gimmick is that each one is meant to be read in the time it takes a single candle to burn down. Smart, right? The plots are everyday stuff gone slightly wrong: people swap letters, lose money, pretend to be rich, or get mistaken for someone else. In The Love-Letters of Smith, a quiet bookkeeper writes to a girl from his boarding house but accidentally sends the note to her protective mother instead. Oops. In The Lost /Half- Hour, a young man raves to a mysterious woman in the dark for 30 minutes—right before he realizes who she actually is. Many stories end with a twist: a stranger turns out to be a crook, a misunderstanding leads to a marriage, or a simple observation uncovers a total lie. Nothing too heavy, but each one leaves you thinking, Ah, gotcha.

Why You Should Read It

I love how clever Bunner is with his words. These stories don't set up a huge world with dramanda kings and queens. Nope. We're in grimy newspaper offices, rich New York hotel lobbies, and cramped shilbedrooms. Bunner gets full of tricks—he'll make you laugh at one character who takes himself too seriously, then show how that same little flaw is quietly heartbreaking. It found the story The Tenor, which is literally 10 pages long, broke my heart in two: a vain opera singer saves a poor man's life on stage because he feared ruining the song... only the poor man didn't exist. There is the tenderness waiting underneath allof the comedy. It feels like talking is being casual that this society is full of masks and misunderstandings, and sometimes truth pops out like a jumpscare. You don't often feel emotionally full with modern flash fiction. This does.

Final Verdict

Perfect for folks who love classic ghost or mystery stories but hate novels that drag. Also great for writers who know how to make every page land the heaviest. If you already like O. Henry's twist endings, you pretty much signed for *Short Sixes* – just with chiller vibes. Yes to: readers snifering on strange short times, people intertes of studying strangers behavior with wink&nudgy narrative. Not for: those needing continous action or epic quests with dragon. And DEFINITELY do not pick it up then blowing out candle afterwards mid-lit unless cause whole candle is why. It just wouldn't commit better. Better risk taking torch with book of mystery.

It took me a while to process the complex ideas here, but the attention to detail regarding the core terminology is flawless. A refreshing and intellectually stimulating read.

I decided to give this a try based on a colleague's recommendation, the argument presented in the middle section is particularly compelling. I'm glad I chose this over the other alternatives.

I've gone through the entire material twice now, and the way it handles controversial points with balance is quite professional. This should be on the reading list of every serious professional.
